dc.description.abstract | The paper examined the theory and distinctive features in Whole Language Approach (WL) in second language education (SLE). In SLE, WL teaching methods such as contentbased teaching and process writing are renowned. However, we should consider that these methods come from the view of language and the view of language education of WL. First, this paper presents the view of language and language education of WL. As is thought that a language develops in social interaction between individuals and a society, the meaning, purpose and function of language should not be apart from language in language education. This view is consistent both with WL curriculum and with WL in SLE. Next, this paper analyzed the feature of WL theory and practice in SLE. WL, unlike others, introduces both reading and writing from the beginning, and WL has high regard for the students' first languages and cultures. These points reflect that WL emphasizes not only the potentials of students learning English as a second language but also the importance of students’ experience and background knowledge. In conclusion, WL in SLE is consistent with the WL approach, and WL teachers look at students as a whole, both in their language development and in their life in a complex society. | en |
